The NBA Board of Governors today voted to permanently implement the in-game flopping penalty as part of the playing rules. The in-game flopping penalty had been adopted on a one-year trial basis for the 2023-24 NBA season. Under the rule, when a game official calls a flop, the offending player is charged with a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul, and the opposing team is awarded one free throw attempt, which can be attempted by any player who is in the game when the technical foul is assessed. A player cannot be ejected from a game based on flopping violations.

That thought aligns with the idea the team could be discussing ways to trade forward Ziaire Williams, as previously reported by The Athletic. That flexibility also helps the Grizzlies stay below the luxury tax and first apron in the case another minor move for roster depth is made. Signing Kennard would give the Grizzlies 15 players on their standard roster. If that’s the next move Memphis makes, don’t expect it to be the final one.

Jason Beede: News: #Magic guard Anthony Black suffered a sprained right ankle in Orlando’s last summer-league game, the @orlandosentinel has learned. The injury is nothing serious, I’m told, but out of caution he will not play tonight vs. Memphis. This also gives other guys opportunities.

Golden State is in a waiting game with the Utah Jazz to try and acquire forward Lauri Markkanen. On Monday, the Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the two teams have a sizable gap between their two trade offers for Markkanen. Lacob stressed that part of the difficulty with making trades is that GMs “want to prove how smart they are” with every move.

In the podcast’s final question, Thompson asked if Lacob felt the other NBA teams were specifically not doing deals with the Warriors because of their four NBA titles in the past decade. Lacob demurred before saying teams were now focusing on going after the current defending champions, the Boston Celtics. “They would never say that, but I would think that you’re pointing to something that’s a little bit of human nature,” Lacob said. “We had an extended, great run. And I have, in the past, definitely felt that at certain times. But, you know, we haven’t won it in two years. It seems like a long time ago to me, now.”

Nearly every key player on the main roster was present during the Hornets’ 80-66 win over Denver. LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges, Brandon Miller, Tre Mann, Seth Curry, Grant Williams, Mark Williams, Cody Martin and Nick Richards all joined president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson and player enhancement coach Kemba Walker for an up-close view of the action, a powerful display of how Hornets’ culture is changing and being reshaped on the fly.
