Taking a leaf out of her skincare diaries and her revelation that barrier care cream is most important for winter, we decided to ask our in-house skincare experts on how does it help and whether everyone needs to include it in their skincare routine.
Barrier care creams are often formulated to hydrate, prevent moisture loss, and bolster the skin’s natural defences. “Ceramides, fatty acids, hyaluronic acid, and other moisturising agents are possible components in these creams, it is slightly thicker than regular moisturising creams or lotions,” explained Dr Jatin Mittal, cosmetologist, skin expert and co-founder, Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi.
Dr Mittal said barrier care creams provide:
· Hydration to the skin,
· Lipid support,
· It counteracts damage caused by free radicals and soothe irritated skin
· Maintains skin’s natural pH balance
· It strengthens the stratum corneum which is the outermost layer of the skin

According to Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, one of the key ingredients in barrier care creams is often occlusive agents, such as petrolatum, beeswax, or dimethicone. “These ingredients create a barrier on the skin’s surface, preventing water loss and protecting against external elements. Additionally, some barrier creams contain humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain moisture, further hydrating the skin,” said Dr Kapoor.
It’s important to note that the effectiveness of barrier care creams can vary depending on the specific formulation and individual skin needs. “If you’re considering using such a product, it’s advisable to choose one based on your skin type and concerns. Furthermore, over time, maintaining a strong skin barrier can be facilitated by regular use and adherence to a prescribed skincare regimen,” noted Dr Mittal.
Does it effectively work in winter?
Not just in winter but in every season barrier care creams are recommended, said Dr Mittal. During the winter months, cold temperatures, low humidity, and indoor heating can contribute to dry and compromised skin and also the skin is often exposed to harsh environmental conditions that can strip away its natural moisture and disrupt the protective barrier. “Thus, it is advisable to use it more frequently in winter. Barrier care creams often contain ingredients that support skin repair, helping to soothe and heal chapped or irritated areas,” said Dr Mittal.
When using a barrier care cream in winter, it’s essential to apply it as part of a consistent skincare routine. “To get the most out of the cream, wash your skin gently with a good face wash before applying the cream. To maintain healthy skin throughout the winter, it’s also important to stay hydrated, eat seasonal fruits and veggies, include vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and omega3 in your diet, use sunscreen, and protect the skin from harsh weather by donning gloves, and scarves,” said Dr Mittal.

However, it’s essential to note that while barrier care creams can be a saviour for many during winter, they may not be suitable for everyone. “Individuals with oily or acne-prone skin might find these creams too heavy and potentially exacerbate their skin issues. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose a barrier care cream that suits your skin type and concerns,” said Dr Kapoor.
When incorporating a barrier care cream into your winter skincare routine, consider the following tips:
1. Choose the right formula: Opt for a barrier cream with ingredients that match your skin’s needs. If you have sensitive skin, look for hypoallergenic options.
2. Layer wisely: Apply the barrier cream as the last step in your skincare routine, on top of lighter products like serums and lotions.

3. Target problem areas: Focus on areas prone to dryness or irritation, such as elbows, knees, and hands.
4. Regular application: Reapply the barrier cream throughout the day, especially after washing your hands or coming into contact with water.
