Music Therapy for Autistic Children (Continued)How can music therapy benefit autistic children? There has been much research done on the benefits of music therapy for autistic children. Some of the key findings are as follows:• Music therapy may help promote wellness by managing stress, enhancing memory, and improving communicationIndividuals of all ages and all abilities can benefit from music therapy. Music therapy has been used to support emotional, cognitive, and social development inmany populations.Research found that music in interventions used with autistic children and teens can improve social behaviours, increase focus and attention, increase communication attempts, reduce anxiety, and improve body awareness and coordination. Many additional studies have found that autistic children and adults respond well to music. Often, autistic individuals respond positively to music when little else can get their attention, which makes music a potentially powerful therapeutic tool.• Music encourages social interactionsResearch has found that autistic children showed more emotional expression and social engagement during music therapy sessions than in play sessions without music. These children also responded to the therapist’s requests more frequently during music therapy than in play sessions without music.Additionally, a skilled therapist can use music with children to increase their social interaction and improve their socialskills.Passing and sharing instruments, music, and movement games; gathering around a central instrument; learning to listen; and singing greetings are just a few of the waysmusic therapy sessions can increase interaction.• Music can improve behaviourIn a study of 41 autistic children over a ten-month period, it was found that weekly music therapy sessions seemed to improve overall behaviour, with the most improvement seen in inattentive behaviours.Children in this study experienced hour-long sessions of music therapy once a week, and their conduct was monitored against a checklist of target behaviours like restlessness, aggression, and noisiness. More than half of the group improved by one or two points on the scale after themusic therapy sessions. You can read the full study published in Science Daily by the UPM and some really encouraging case studies of the different ways that music therapy has helped autistic childrenhere.#share#autism#autismawareness#music#musictherapy

🎶 Transform Your Home into a Calming Oasis with Music! 🏠✨Creating a sensory-friendly environment for neurodiverse children is essential for their well-being. 🧡 And music can play a powerful role in their sensory regulation journey. 🎵✨ Here's how you can use music at home to create a calm and soothing atmosphere for your child (and YOU):1️⃣ Sensory-Friendly Music Selection:Choose instrumental tracks, soothing melodies with gentle rhythms, or preferred music that uplifts your child's mood. These can help regulate emotions and promote relaxation in your little one.2️⃣ Calming Space Creation:Designate a quiet, comfortable area in your home for sensory regulation. Fill it with soft cushions, cozy or weighted blankets, sensory toys, and incorporate music to set the calming mood.3️⃣ Grounding Technique:Try pairing deep breathing exercises or deep pressure with calming music to help your child focus and reduce anxiety. Rhythmic movements can also be incorporated to enhance the sensory experience. Moving in straight lines (think rocking side to side) organizes and calms the brain.4️⃣ Individualized Strategies:Observe and understand your child's unique sensory needs. Experiment with different styles of music and sensory experiences to find what works best for them.5️⃣ Consistency is Key:Incorporate music as a regular part of your child's sensory regulation routine. Consistency and familiar melodies can provide a sense of security and predictability.Remember, it's important to consult with healthcare professionals or a music therapist for personalized advice tailored to your child's needs. 🤝✨ Share in the comments below: What are your favorite calming songs or music strategies that work for your neurodiverse child? Let's create a community of support and share our experiences! 💬🎶#SensoryRegulation #MusicTherapy #NeurodiverseKids #CalmingStrategies #CreatingCalmAtHome #MusicStrategy #MusicTherapist #Autism #DownSyndrome #AutismSupport #CerebralPalsy #DevelopmentalDisability #LearningDisability #Tourettes #ADHDSupport #ADHDKids

Music has a remarkable way of connecting with our emotions such as helping us symbolically experience feelings of love, joy, peace and excitement. It can help us connect with our senses soaking up our environmentthrough lyrics and choruses that can linger in the air with no expiration date attached to them. However, for individuals on the autism spectrum, it can be a complex journey. Just as we all have our unique preferences when it comes to music, those with autism may experience sound in a more intricate and profound manner. Understanding and accommodating these sensory sensitivities in the realm of music is crucial for fostering a harmonious and inclusive environment.Sensory meltdowns, often triggered by auditory overstimulation, can be especially distressing for individuals with autism. For example the sound of many voices in a room talking over each other can send an autistic individual running into the hallway to escape the noise and ground themselves till they feel safe again.May be an autistic individual finds themselves at Starbucks and the blender making coffee beveragesat first seems like music to the ears similar to that of a drum, yet over time it becomes too much for them to take in, so they start to cry long before they consider going outside to a more neutral environment.Or perhaps you are like me,you have extreme difficulties with bright lights, music playing over the loud speakers and being in noisy environment's like a crowded mall, so when shopping you go when the store first opens because there are less people and you are less likely to experience feelings of being over stimulated.Friends... our world doesn't come with an on or off switch, or the option to always put sound onthe mute button. Yet by raising awareness and embracing these differences, we can create a space where music becomes a source of comfort and self-expression. Let's celebrate the beautiful tapestry of neurodiversity and work together to make the world a place where everyone can enjoy the profound power of music, regardless of their sensory experiences. 🎶💙Question: What is your favorite type of music to listen to any why? If you can/could play any musical instrument in the world what would it be and why?

This Is Why Autism And Music Talent Are Common (MUST SEE) Why is autism and music talent so common? I’m jumping in and talking about that right now.So music and autism have a huge relationship, and have done for many years but why? There are a number of autistic individuals who are musicians and are very talented in the music industry.I myself am a self taught multi musician on the autism spectrum and i think i know why.As I learned the structure of how instruments create music and chords i realised it was all mathematics and patterns.Autistic people are logical thinkers and love patterns. This is why autistic people love routines. So music is no exception, it is a pattern based mathematical sound, which is sensory stimulating to.Please leave me a comment if you have anything to add to this, i read every single one. Even without engaging a music therapist, using music at home can be a rewarding way to support the development and wellbeing of children with ASD. It is also a great way to build a relationship with the child.
