Homemade Chocolate Candy Bars

I’m a believer that nearly everything is better homemade, so surely homemade candy bars would be the same. I was willing to take one for the team and find out.Friends, homemade candy bars are so much tastier than store-bought. When you combine delicious high-quality chocolate with other delectable ingredients that you love, the results are delicious.

I made four dozen chocolate bars to give to friends. It was so much fun to see the look on people’s faces when I told them I had made the gorgeous (and tasty) gift. You too can see that look in your friends’ eyes when you present them with handmade chocolate bars. It’s so much easier than you think! Trust me, your friends and family will love you forever is you start bringing homemade candy bars to things.

What could I make homemade chocolate bars for?

You could give them away as party favors, as birthday gifts to your friends, you can send them in the mail to your favorite blogger *cough*me*cough*, your friend who could use a pick-me-up, or enjoy them at a baby shower. You could make and hide them and then eat them all alone once your family is in bed. You could even come up with your own holiday and celebrate with chocolate… there’s never a bad time to enjoy it is there?

What do you put in homemade chocolate bars?

Ther recipe gives a few different bars to make and ideas on things to put in, including mini marshmallows, slivered almonds, dry roasted peanuts, crushed Oreo cookies, and toffee bits. Other options include other nuts, M&Ms, small candies, small bits of dried fruits, crushed peppermints, and crushed graham crackers or pretzels. You can use any combinations that sound good to you!

What is tempered chocolate?

Tempered chocolate is the shiny, uniform chocolate that breaks off easily, just like you would expect in a chocolate bar. Chocolate is tempered by slowly heating and cooling it, which can be time-consuming. This chocolate is already tempered so it’s that much easier!

These Homemade Candy Bar recipes, made with chocolate, marshmallows, nuts and more, make a delicious dessert! Just a mold and your microwave will help you create some truly tasty chocolate bars.

  • Chocoley Chocolate-
  • Bada Bing Bada Boom Candy & Molding Formula – White
  • Bada Bing Bada Boom Candy & Molding Formula – Milk
  • Bada Bing Bada Boom Candy & Molding Formula – Dark
  • Bada Bing Bada Boom Candy & Molding Formula – Extra Dark
  • Candy Bar Mold & Packaging
  • Things to add to the chocolate bars- mini marshmallows, slivered almonds, dry roasted peanuts, crushed Oreo cookies, toffee bits, etc.

Instructions

  1. Place the molds on a flat surface and add what you would like to them. My favorite combos were:
  2. Cookies and Cream: 1 to 2 crushed Oreo cookies in white chocolate
  3. Homemade Symphony Bar: scant 1/4 cup of both slivered almonds and toffee bits in milk chocolate
  4. Rocky Road: scant 1/4 cup of both mini marshmallows and dry roasted peanuts in dark chocolate
  5. Dark Mr. Goodbar: 1/4 cup dry roasted peanuts in extra dark chocolate
  6. You really could add just about anything!
  7. Melt the chocolate according the directions that come with the package (they are great and really detailed!). Carefully drizzle a small amount of chocolate over the goodies in the mold. You’ll add 1/4 to 1/3 cup of chocolate per mold. Gently pick up the mold holding onto the edge and raise it off the surface you are working on 3 to 4 inches. Drop the mold so that it kind of smacks down on to the table. This helps the melted chocolate to settle into the cracks and it also gets air bubbles out. Continue to carefully drop the mold 4 or 5 times until things look settled. If you need to add a bit more chocolate do it now. Drop it another time or two to smooth out any chocolate you might have added.
  8. Repeat until you make as many chocolate bars as you’d like.
  9. Let the homemade candy bars rest at room temperature until completely set. This may take a few hours depending on the temperature in your house.
  10. Once the chocolate has set gently remove the mold and place the candy bar in the cellophane bag that came with the mold. Store according to the package directions for storing the Chocoley chocolate (in a cool place away from strong odors).

Notes

These were so much fun to make. I didn’t do a lot of measuring when it came time to melt the chocolate. I just dumped some in the bowl (I used the double-boiler method for melting) and melted it. I used the melted chocolate in the mold and if I needed a little more, I’d melt a little more. It worked great. At the end of the batch, when I had a little left in the bottom of the bowl I scraped it out into a little cup and let my kids dip pretzel sticks in it. Best. Snack. Ever!

What kind of chocolate do you use to make chocolate bars? ›

For best results, use a good quality chocolate. Chocolate bars are best as chocolate chips often have a waxy coating that isn't ideal for melting. I love Valhrona, Guittard or Ghirardelli.

How to make chocolate chunks from chocolate bar? ›

Chocolate chunks

Simply begin at the corner of your bar, pressing the knife's teeth into it using both hands, one holding the handle and the other putting pressure onto the knife. Chopping chocolate into fragments is ideal if you need chocolate for melting, or if you want to include them in chocolate chip cookies.

What is the best chocolate to use for homemade chocolates? ›

Some Recommended Chocolate Brands

I personally like to use Callebaut, Cacao Barry, and Guittard for more casual baking (or projects where I have a smaller budget), and Valrhona for those times when I really want the chocolate flavor to shine and be the star.

What type of chocolate do you use for making candy? ›

Couverture, or chocolate formulated with a higher percentage of cocoa butter, is essential for making chocolate bonbons, says Ocean House Collection pastry chef Maya Hayes. "Make sure you are using bars, chunks, or callets, not chocolate chips," she says.

What is the best melting chocolate? ›

Couverture chocolates have been specifically designed to use as a coating, with a minimum of 31% cocoa butter, so they're easy to temper even if you're unfamiliar with the process. Brands like Valrhona, Callebaut, Cocoa Barry, and Scharffen Berger are easy to find in gourmet grocery stores or specialty shops.

How do you make melted chocolate shapes? ›

Simply pour your melted chocolate directly into clean, ungreased molds. Tap the molds on a hard surface to remove the air bubbles and pop 'em into the freezer. When the molds become misty, take them out and remove the chocolates by tapping.

How do you get melted chocolate into molds? ›

Pour the Chocolate

If you have a bigger mold, you may be able to use a spoon or spatula. However, this method can be messy. We recommend using a pastry bag or a squeeze bottle to get the chocolate into the mold without wasting it. Using your bag or bottle, carefully fill each cavity of the chocolate mold.

How do you make chocolate to pour into molds? ›

To make molded chocolates, start by microwaving some chocolate chips or bars in 1-minute intervals until the chocolate is fully melted. Then, pour the melted chocolate into a plastic candy mold, and scrape the excess chocolate off of the top of the mold using a knife.

Can you use regular chocolate bars for melting? ›

What's better for melting: chocolate bars or chocolate chips? High quality chocolate bars are the best for melting. High quality chocolate chips work fine, but they often include ingredients that stabilize their shape when heated, which can get in the way of a super-smooth melt.

Can you use regular chocolate chips as melting chocolate? ›

Because chocolate chips contain soy lecithin, a food additive that helps them retain their shape when they're baked, they might not melt as smoothly as chocolate bars. But if they're the only thing you have on hand, or if you're going for convenience, they're a good choice because they're already cut to size.

How to make designs on chocolates? ›

Make shapes on the chilled baking sheet

Next, place your chilled baking parchment over your designs on the baking tray. Trace the pictures with your melted chocolate, squeezing gently on the cornet. Don't worry if the first few are a bit wobbly!

Is it worth making chocolate from scratch? ›

By making homemade chocolate with premium ingredients, you will always have high-quality chocolate at home. Don't try to satisfy your chocolate craving with low-quality, mass-produced chocolate, which tends to be heavy in sugar, milk substitutes and vanilla.

Is it worth it to make your own chocolate? ›

"It's really a science first and art second, and the science needs to be understood." Chocolate-making takes research, practice, and plenty of patience, but the finished product—from dark chocolate-dipped marshmallows to mango-sprinkled mendiants—makes the process worthwhile.

How to make personalised chocolate wrappers? ›

Step by step
  1. Remove the packaging from the chocolate bars and wrap them in the foil of your choice.
  2. Secure the foil with tape or a branded label or sticker.
  3. Wrap the custom label or card around your candy bar.
  4. Fold the label or card around the bar.
